A recent encounter with a recruiter from SGI Buddhism has sparked a discussion on social media about the organization’s recruitment tactics and the broader topic of Buddhism in America. The encounter, which took place at the 10th and Osage station, involved an elderly woman who, after a brief conversation, demanded the individual’s phone number, handed out pamphlets, and invited them to a Sunday service. The woman even went as far as to say, “If you don’t come, I know where you work”. The individual was not intimidated but found the approach inappropriate and off-putting. After researching SGI Buddhism, they found that the organization had been excommunicated from Nichiren Buddhism and expressed concerns about it potentially being a cult.
