Why are gas prices different around the Denver metro?

DENVER (KDVR) — Gas prices in Colorado are some of the lowest in the country, but some nearby gas stations are cheaper than others. According to a roadside assistance service, this is because of a few reasons.

Gas prices across the United States are below $3 a gallon for the first time in four years, and according to AAA, Colorado currently has the second cheapest gas in the country, averaging at $2.41 per gallon. However, some gas stations around the Denver metro are much lower and higher than the average.

GasBuddy, which tracks the prices of gas across the nation, is recording some gas prices as low as $1.69 and as high as $2.57 in Denver. Meanwhile, outside of the city, prices in the Denver metro are nearing $3. According to Skylar McKinley with AAA, this difference is mainly because of the location and the competition.

Why are gas prices different?

McKinley said gas costs different prices depending on the area. The price of gas can include the cost of getting the gas to a specific area. For example, it’s easier and cheaper to get gas to Denver than to a remote location in the mountains.
