Skunk in Arvada neighborhood first to test positive for rabies this year

DENVER (KDVR) — A skunk found in the city of Arvada has tested positive for rabies, marking the first rabies case in Colorado and Jefferson County this year.

Jefferson County Public Health said Wednesday that the rabid skunk was found in Arvada’s Oak Crest neighborhood and that the positive rabies test followed an investigation by local animal control and public health officials.

The health department said the warmer, drier winter this year means people, pets and wildlife are spending more time outdoors, which increases the chance of contact with rabies.

“When the weather is warmer than usual, wildlife like skunks and bats can wander into neighborhoods more often, which can increase encounters between animals and people,” said Rachel Reichardt, Environmental Health Specialist and Zoonosis Lead, in a statement. “Keeping your pets vaccinated and staying away from wild animals are the best ways to stay safe year-round.”…
