Mistake by tax preparer costs Denver woman thousands

DENVER (KDVR) — A warning as millions of people prepare their tax returns —  a Denver woman refinanced her home and took other steps to pay a tax bill that she later learned she never owed.

Susan Brashsear showed FOX31 documentation confirming that H&R Block calculations showed she owed approximately $45,000 to the IRS after employees completed and reviewed her 2022 return, but the information was incorrect.

“You’re dealing with people’s lives, I was luckily enough to not go bankrupt,” she said.

She was advised to pay off the amount quickly to avoid paying interest, so she refinanced her home at a much higher rate, adding an additional $220,000 to her mortgage…
