Lakewood West 17th Place Explosion

West Metro Explosion

On March 16th, 2026 at 16:48 West Metro Fire Rescue Engine 2 and Medic 5 was dispatched to a reported explosion in the 11400 block of W. 17th Place in Lakewood. Engine 2 arrived on scene to a small two-story multi-family townhome with nothing showing and started the investigation. Engine 2 reported an explosion inside with one patient and to add District 1 and Tower 2. Medic 5 arrived and assisted with the injured patient. Engine 2 upgraded the call to a full response with smoke in the building and basement and pulled a 1 3/4 line and Tower 2 started the primary search in the basement. District 1 arrived and assumed command in the offensive strategy and crews evacuated the building. Crews found no active fire and the rest of the response was cancelled. The family was inside the townhome at the time of the explosion and the one injured patient had minor injuries and was not transported. The explosion had enough force to blow out the back patio door and broke a window on the second floor. Due to the structural damage, the home is unsafe to occupy.
