L.A. Homeowners Can Now Legalize Pre-2020 Unpermitted ADUs Under New City Rules

If you built or converted space into an ADU or junior ADU before 2020 and never pulled a permit, the city of Los Angeles now has a penalty-free path to get it legal.

The LADBS bulletin on streamlined permitting under AB 2533 took effect in mid-July and was revised yesterday, laying out an amnesty program for homeowners with unpermitted accessory dwelling units (ADUs) or junior ADUs built before January 1, 2020.

A key homeowner-friendly provision: existing pre-2020 units can keep their current setbacks, which may reduce the chances of having to relocate a structure—though repairs and corrections may still be required to meet health and safety standards…
