Thirty-eight people were arrested around Los Angeles over the weekend as local law enforcement cracked down on illegal street takeovers and dangerous driving.
The the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Street Takeover Task Force stopped dangerous events in Compton, Carson and Century City between Sept. 25 and Sept. 27. Authorities wrote 127 tickets, towed 25 vehicles and seized two guns during the operations. LASD called the crackdown a “significant increase in enforcement activity and accountability.”
The operation specifically targeted illegal street takeovers, street racing, reckless driving, and other forms of dangerous driving that threaten public safety. The busts included street racing in Carson and a street takeover with more than 200 people in attendance in Compton.
“Illegal street takeovers and street racing are not harmless gatherings,” LASD said. “Drivers performing dangerous maneuvers at high speeds can quickly lose control of their vehicles, placing spectators, pedestrians, other motorists, and nearby residents at serious risk of injury or death. These takeovers can also block intersections and roadways, impede emergency response, damage public, and private property, and create dangerous conditions for surrounding communities. The presence of firearms in some incidents further increases the risk of violence and serious harm.”…
