LONG BEACH — As storm-fueled tides swamped Southern California communities, forcing the closure of piers and beaches, meteorologists warned that more damage was all but certain late Saturday and Sunday as Tropical Storm Rachel barreled toward the U.S.-Mexican border.
The storm, which was about 500 miles offshore at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, will bring “major coastal flooding,” strong wind, “significant flash and urban flooding,” and even a chance of tornadoes, meteorologists said.
