Shots fired in confrontation with officers in Boyle Heights

Shots were fired when officers confronted a man with a gun while investigating a vehicle in Boyle Heights, authorities said Monday.

The shooting occurred at 10:18 p.m. Sunday in the area of First and Vicente Fernandez streets, according the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers got out of their patrol vehicle to investigate a vehicle stopped in the middle of Vicente Fernandez Street with its doors open and they saw a man in his 20s armed with a handgun. Shortly afterward, shots were fired, the LAPD said.

The suspect was not struck by gunfire and ran but was eventually taken into custody, police said.

The officers were not injured, the LAPD said.
