When the L.A. coroner called Karen Webb to pass on the grim news that her 29-year-old son had been murdered in a Venice dog park last week she remembers she only had one question. “I asked her if he was sticking up for someone when he was shot” Webb told Los Angeles in an interview Monday, as she made plans along with his father, her ex-husband Mark Melton, to fly the body of their slain son, Zackery Melton, back to Laredo, Texas. The answer, Webb learned, was yes. “The detective working my son’s case told me my Zackery died honorably.” she said. “That girl might have been the one dead if he didn’t step in.” Melton, who lived in a tent community at the Westminster Dog Park on Pacific Avenue, just a block from the bustling boardwalk that is one of L.A.’s most visited tourist attractions, had intervened in an argument between a young woman and registered sex offender Tyrone Jones, 26, who has a criminal history connected to human trafficking, court records show.
