Black Market Flea has hosted monthly community street markets in Downtown L.A. since 2021. The microfestival is a local gem, not just for Black entrepreneurs, but as a showcase and celebration of Black culture and community. BMF has featured more than 150 vendors and special guests like Doechii and Questlove from The Roots. But the event is in trouble.
Black Market Flea was co-founded by changemakers Mayah Hatcher and Kene O, who executed their community collective vision for Black entrepreneurs. An April 16 Instagram post introduced a GoFundMe and described the challenges BMF faces to continue:
“For almost 4 years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating a safe and inclusive space for Black creators and entrepreneurs to thrive and connect with the community. Now, as the economy shifts and sacred spaces for communities of color are even more so under threat, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to sustain this beautiful world out of our own pockets.”…
