LA County moves to limit license plate data sharing amid ICE raids

LOS ANGELES — If you look closely at some streetlights across Southern California, you may notice small black cameras pointed at the road. These are automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, which scan and store images of passing vehicles.

Police departments use them to track stolen cars and investigate serious crimes. But the vast amount of data they collect has raised privacy concerns — especially as federal immigration enforcement ramps up in the region.
