The family of Maxwell Aguirre, a 22-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran, is suing the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department following his death by suicide in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility. Aguirre died in September 2023, just weeks after a previous suicide attempt, raising concerns about the safety protocols in place at the facility.
According to Homecoming News, Aguirre’s family claims that deputies at the jail failed to conduct required wellness checks. Instead, they allegedly watched YouTube videos and ate Chick-fil-A. Video footage reportedly shows that deputies did not check on Aguirre, despite logging that they had. This practice, known as “burning checks,” is at the center of the family’s lawsuit.
At a press conference, the family’s attorney, Denisse Gastélum, called for criminal charges against the deputies involved and urged the state to revoke their peace officer certification.
