LA tax rate jumps as city looks to close $1B budget deficit

For the first time in 17 years, Los Angeles residents are expected to see a significant surge in their trash collection fees.

This comes after a 12-2 vote by the Los Angeles City Council on Oct. 7. In the Tuesday meeting, city officials cited a citywide fiscal crisis as the main reason for the large increase, which would see trash fee increases of more than 50% applied to hundreds of thousands of Angelenos. By 2026, the approved motion would increase the fee for single-family homes and duplexes from approximately $36.32 per month to $55.95, a sharp year-over-year increase. By the 2029-2030 fiscal year, the new fees are expected to go up $10 more, totaling $65.93, according to a presentation from LA Sanitation and Environment, the office responsible for trash pickup.
