Funding cut leaves unhoused Angelenos without crucial free shower service

A crucial shower service for unhoused people — which primarily operated in Skid Row — ended suddenly in June after over five years in operation.

Last year, the L.A. Sanitation CARE+ Mobile Hygiene Program provided over 37,000 showers to unhoused Angelenos using custom, mobile shower trailers, with 23,000 of those in Skid Row. But after providing showers and bathrooms since 2019, the program was cut in the latest city budget to save other L.A. Sanitation jobs.

“How can I say — that sucks. I wish the funding could push forward, because we need this stuff,” said Alejandro Tomás Peña, who used to shower at a Skid Row location every day. “It helps out the homeless. It’s helping me out.”…
