On the night of April 13, 2023, police say, Victoryloc Nguyen pulled on battle gear, armed himself with two assault weapons, a handgun, along with a tactical vest stuffed with ammo, and carried his cache to the rooftop of his apartment in The Pearl apartment complex in Marina del Rey.
From his rooftop perch, he then opened fire, unleashing a fusillade of nearly 100 rounds of ammunition, largely at Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputies who responded to the scene, as he live-streamed the mayhem on his cellphone. Luckily, no one was injured, but the chaotic scene traumatized the community and sent his neighbors and sheriff’s deputies scrambling for cover.
This week, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Sadler found Nguyen, a former chef, not guilty by reason of insanity and ordered him to be confined to a state mental hospital for a maximum of life. The 43-year-old had been charged with a slew of felonies, among then assaulting nearly a dozen of police officers, along with shooting at an occupied building, first-degree residential burglary and unlawful possession of an assault weapon, along with four counts of assault with an assault weapon and 10 counts of assault with an assault weapon on a peace officer…
