LAUSD Heat Action: Schools boost cooling, equity-centered protections

Though winter and cooler weather is approaching, the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education is preparing for the extreme heat that affects the city.

As extreme heat events grow in frequency and severity, the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education unanimous voted to build resiliency on campuses, invest in clean-energy infrastructure and respond proactively to ensure student and staff safety, prioritizing historically underserved communities and communities impacted by extreme heat. The vote will, among other things, prohibit new artificial turf installations at early education, elementary and middle schools in the district.
