California Governor Gavin Newsom extended a crucial deadline for wildfire safety projects, according to an emergency proclamation issued on March 1st and recent developments reported by Gov.ca.gov. Moving quickly to address wildfire risks, the state’s fast-track forest management program will now accept project applications through May 1, 2026, a year-long extension beyond the former cutoff.

Following a year marked by devastating Los Angeles wildfires, the streamlined process allows community, tribal, and public partners to get a jump start on safety project submissions during the rainy season. “When we created this fast‑track forest management program, the goal was simple: cut through bureaucracy, honor our commitment to environmental values, and move faster to protect Californians from catastrophic fire,” Governor Newsom stated in a press release.
