Orange County city to require workers at self-checkout lanes

Grocery stores in yet another Southern California city will be required to staff their self-checkout kiosks in a move aimed at protecting jobs and curbing retail theft.

The Costa Mesa City Council this week adopted an ordinance similar to one approved by Long Beach in June. It requires at least one employee to monitor self-checkout lanes and limits shoppers using them to 15 items.
