The year was 2014. Barack Obama was the president. Jerry Brown was California’s governor. A loaf of white bread was $1.40. A gallon of gas in San Francisco was a little under $4.
The list of California’s richest suburbs looked different too. Back then, four of the 10 richest suburbs in the state were in or around Los Angeles, and the rest were here in the Bay Area.
But times have changed. A decade later, 9 out of 10 of California’s richest suburbs are located in the Bay Area, according to a new Chronicle analysis.
The new numbers are, in part, an update of an analysis we did last year looking at census data to determine California’s 50 richest suburbs based on mean household income between 2019 and 2023 (the most recent year that data was available at the time). Los Altos, Alamo and Orinda topped the list…
