Humpback whale tangled in fishing net spotted off the coast of Los Angeles

Wildlife experts are attempting to rescue a humpback whale found tangled in a commercial fishing net off the coast of Los Angeles on Thursday.

The entangled whale was first spotted and reported in the Palos Verdes area by Harbor Breeze whale watching tours. The whale was later seen near Point Fermin in San Pedro.

“The Whale was definitely struggling and was restricted in its movements,” a spokesperson for Harbor Breeze told KTLA. “The net seemed to be wrapped around the center of its body restricting movement of its pectoral fins, and was even wrapped around part of its tail. This obviously makes it harder for the whale to come up to breathe and prevents it from being able to eat.”

Wildlife experts attempted to free the adult humpback from the gillnet on Thursday. However, experts were unable to remove the fishing gear due to difficult ocean conditions, NOAA Fisheries Ecologist Sarah Mesnick told KTLA…
