A pair of elementary schools in Long Beach are set to shutter – but not if the community has anything to say about it.
In a letter to families, Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent David Zaid said that the decision to recommend the closure of Gompers Elementary School at the end of the 2026-27 school year came down to a number of factors.
Those factors included “enrollment, school capacity and the long-term sustainability of district programs and resources,” Zaid’s letter to the community explained; Gompers, located at 5206 Briercrest Avenue in Lakewood, is currently operating “below its available capacity.”…
