Atmospheric River timing: When the most intense rain might hit Southern California

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles is closely monitoring an upcoming storm system that is expected to bring a significant shift to a wet weather pattern in Southern California.

The extended forecast indicates a robust storm moving through the region from late Wednesday through Friday morning, with moist and showery conditions persisting into Saturday.

Meteorologists are carefully tracking the discrepancies between the Global Forecast System (GFS) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) models.

The GFS suggests a slower and weaker storm arriving on Wednesday and Thursday, while the ECMWF presents a different timeline. Despite these differences, there is high confidence in the likelihood of rain, though the exact timing and amounts remain uncertain.

Current estimates for the late Wednesday through Friday morning storm indicate widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches.

The highest amounts, ranging from 2 to 3 inches, are anticipated on south-facing mountain slopes, while lower amounts of 0.50 to 1.00 inches are expected across interior valleys and the deserts.
