1,000,000 gallons of untreated sewage released into ocean of California coast during mega storm

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has declared an ocean water closure for Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro following the release of approximately one million gallons of untreated sewage, which has now been halted.

The sewage discharge occurred around 6 a.m. on February 5, 2024, and entered the Dominguez Channel, ultimately terminating near Cabrillo Beach. In response to this incident, Public Health officials have advised residents and visitors to avoid any contact with ocean water in the affected area until further notice.

The ocean water closure will remain in effect until sampling results indicate that bacterial levels meet health standards. The Rain Advisory, cautioning against contact with all ocean waters, has also been extended until Wednesday, February 7th.

To provide real-time updates and information, the County’s beach closure hotline is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-525-5662. Residents can access a map of impacted locations and find additional details on the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s official website: PublicHealth.LACounty.gov/Beach/.
