Major California downtown sees second wettest three days since weather records began in 1877

In a remarkable meteorological event, Downtown Los Angeles has experienced its second wettest 72-hour period in recorded history, with a staggering 8.51 inches of rain falling over the last three days. This deluge ranks only behind the unprecedented rainfall observed from February 28th through March 2nd in 1938, which amounted to 9.21 inches.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard issued a Public Information Statement today, highlighting the recent rainfall pattern. The latest installment of precipitation included 1.48 inches on February 6th, following 4.10 inches on the 4th and 2.93 inches on the 5th.

This cumulative three-day total of 8.51 inches constitutes 60 percent of the 30-year average seasonal rainfall in Downtown Los Angeles, based on data from 1991-2020, which stands at 14.25 inches. The current water season (October 1st through September 30th) has already seen 15.43 inches of rain, surpassing the normal of 7.80 inches by 7.63 inches through February 6th. This remarkable achievement represents 118 percent of the normal seasonal rainfall.
