The man who attempted to assault a first responder then proceeded to have a nearly six-hour stand-off with deputies in his Canyon Country home pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on Monday, according to Venusse Dunn the spokesperson of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The suspect, 65-year-old Carl Pruett , attempted to attack a first responder with what was said to be a sword-like object and then proceeded to barricade himself inside his home on the 27400 block of Plumwood Avenue in Canyon Country.
His actions also caused nearby Canyon Springs Community Elementary School to go into a hard lockdown until parents arrived for their children.
Pruett is now being charged with assault with a deadly weapon upon a peace officer, threatening to cause great bodily injury or death to another person and grand theft from a separate incident.
The previously mentioned grand theft occurred on Oct. 25, 2023, when he stole an iPhone 14 Pro, which had a value exceeding $950.
Pruett was formerly convicted of assaulting someone with a firearm in June 2017.
