Compton man mauled to death by dogs in backyard

A Compton man was mauled to death by his dogs in his backyard, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 900 block of N. Thorson Ave. around 7 a.m. Friday. A woman told authorities she hadn’t been able to get a hold of her friend and that she went over to his house and found him.

The attack happened Thursday night. Lt. Michael Gomez with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said during a press conference that the 35-year-old man may have been a breeder.

“There is surveillance footage of the incident or surrounding the property and it was discovered that as our victim was in the backyard, apparently feeding them,” he said. “It sounds like they attacked him and ultimately he succumbed to his injuries.”

There were 13 dogs involved, including five adult dogs. All are believed to be pit bulls.

Some neighbors told KNX News’ Jon Baird they heard a lot of barking in the evening. One of the neighbors, Carmen, lives across the street from the victim.

“This terrible because he’s such a young guy and he has his whole life ahead of him and we would see him, drive in and out the home and I believe he also has a friend,” she said. “His friend will come over and he’s fairly young too. So at this point, I don’t even know if his family knows or not.”
