2 Horses Struck, Killed on 5 Freeway in Sylmar; 1 Horse Saved

SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES, July 3 (KNN) — Two horses were killed after being struck by vehicles on northbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the 210 Freeway in Sylmar late Tuesday evening.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the California Highway Patrol’s communications center received several calls of horses running in lanes of traffic on the westbound 210 Freeway transition to the northbound I-5, according to CHP Sergeant Frank Vargas who briefed KNN on camera at the scene.

Subsequent reports indicated the horses were possibly struck and some were running away.

Several CHP units responded and upon arrival, found a couple of separate scenes involving vehicles and deceased horses on the northbound I-5 at about Balboa Boulevard, Vargas said.

One horse came to a rest on the northbound shoulder and another in the HOV lane. Good Samaritans saved a third horse using rope and brought it to the right shoulder just south of the crash scenes.

Vargas was thankful for the good Samaritans who took it upon themselves to save the horse, helping to prevent another horse casualty as well as another collision.
