Flooding shuts down SB 101 Freeway near downtown Los Angeles

A broken water main left the 101 Freeway flooded Wednesday morning, prompting officials to close lanes through the Boyle Heights neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles.

The flooding was initially reported near 4th Street around 1:30 a.m. and prompted officials to issue a SigAlert for the complete shutdown of the freeway in both directions as crews worked to repair the issues.

The northbound lanes were reopened just after 4 a.m. but the southbound side remained closed, the California Highway Patrol posted in an update on X.

The Mission Road onramp to the southbound 101 was also closed as the crews continued to work to clear the freeway, the CHP posted around 4:30 a.m.

Video from the scene showed water pooled across all southbound lanes of the freeway as of 5:30 a.m.

The CHP has since extended the SigAlert , stating that all southbound lanes are expected to remain closed until around 9 a.m.
