L.A. County Sheriff gives update on deputy gangs: Critics underwhelmed

L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna told the Civilian Oversight Commission Thursday his department is now taking a ‘zero-tolerance’ stance against deputy gangs and cliques.

Sheriff Luna told the commission that his department had implemented many of the panel’s 27 recommendations to eliminate deputy gangs, including the zero-tolerance policy, across all levels of the department.

As a result, he says at least two deputies have been fired so far.

As of Thursday, Luna said, 99.6% of the sworn members of his department have read and acknowledged the new law enforcement gang policy. “I have also taken the recommendation that the department evaluate involvement in a gang or hate group when making hiring and promotional decisions,” he said…
