Federal safety board lists Coronado Bridge as potentially at risk of ‘catastrophic collapse’ if hit by a vessel

SAN DIEGO — The National Transportation Safety Board identified the Coronado Bridge as one of 68 bridges nationwide that need an assessment to determine whether it is at risk of collapsing if struck by a vessel.

In a new report, the NTSB found that the Coronado Bridge, which CalTrans owns, does not have a vulnerability assessment in place in case a collision occurs.

The report is in response to last year’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which killed six construction workers…
