Residents of downtown Los Angeles are mourning the loss of their colossal local Macy’s location as closures leave historic buildings all over the country empty.
With bare shelves, the 7th Street in downtown Los Angeles is preparing to shut down . No final day has been reported yet but as the closure was originally announced in January, it looks imminent.
With the closure of Macy’s, for the first time in 150 years, there won’t be a department store in downtown LA. The closures are reportedly part of a turnaround strategy. In 2024, it revealed plans to close 150 stores by 2026 as a part of its Bold New Chapter strategy.
In cutting down their locations, Macy’s is investing in the 350 remaining locations it has deemed worth continuing to operate.
‘Closing is never easy’
“Closing any store is never easy,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. said in a statement. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores.”…
