North Hollywood Man Sentenced to Over 12 Years for Assault on Toddler Son, Resulting in Permanent Brain Injuries

A father from North Hollywood has been sentenced to 12 years and eight months in state prison following a severe assault that left his 14-month-old son with life-altering injuries. As reported by KTLA, Cesar Daniel Cabrera Jr., 23, pleaded no contest to one felony count of child abuse under conditions likely to cause great bodily injury. The defendant also faced charges connected to two separate burglary counts.

The assault, which occurred on March 22, 2022, required the young boy to undergo emergency surgery for permanent head and brain injuries that will affect him for the duration of his life. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Cabrera not only confessed to the abuse but also admitted to the special allegation of personally inflicting great bodily injury on a child under the age of five. The additional eight months added to Cabrera’s sentence relate to the two counts of second-degree burglary for which he also pleaded no contest.

In a statement obtained by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the violence as “monstrous” and stressed that the office would continue to ensure maximum accountability for those who harm children.
