California Introduces “No Vigilantes Act” to Curb Law Enforcement Impersonation and Public Fear

On Monday, a new California bill called the “No Vigilantes Act” was announced in response to public fear and confusion surrounding immigration sweeps, sometimes led by law enforcement impersonators. An incident occurred last week in Pasadena when Francisco Castañon attempted to take a photo of a vehicle’s license plate that he believed belonged to immigration operations. Inside the unmarked, tinted black car was a man wearing a “police” vest, with plain clothes underneath, who eventually jumped out of the car and pulled a gun on Castañon.
