20 Arrested in Carson, Calif. Crackdown on Illegal Street Racing; LA County Sheriff’s Dept Intensifies Enforcement

Carson, Calif. – In a decidedly uncompromising move by law enforcement agencies, 20 individuals were arrested in Carson during an enforcement operation against illegal street racing, CBS Los Angeles reported. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, in collaboration with several agencies, carried out the crackdown on July 13, leading also to 11 issued traffic citations and the towing of 19 vehicles.

While fighting to curb this surge in illegal racing, a study released by LA County officials in March highlighted a notable increase of 64% in street takeovers within Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s 2nd District, which encompasses Carson. Nearly 300 incidents were reported in just the last quarter of 2024. Working closely with California Highway Patrol and local officials, the LASD has intensified their efforts, a phenomenon that Captain Alise Norman spoke to: “Let me be absolutely clear: these activities are not only illegal—they are reckless, disruptive, and deadly,” Captain Norman said. Issued for misdemeanor warrant citations, two out of the 20 arrests were made, and seven vehicles were impounded for 30 days.

The enforcement detail not only targeted drivers and spectators involved in street racing but also aimed at those with vehicles bearing illegal modifications. Two of the citations handed out were for modified emissions violations.
