139-year-old retail chain to close major location after historic downfall

Sears was once the largest retailer in the U.S., but after filing for bankruptcy in 2018, its footprint has dwindled to just the single digits.

A Sears location is closing in Southern California, leaving just one store in the entire state. The store in Burbank is shutting its doors, and the only one left is located at the Concord’s Sunvalley Shopping Center.

This comes amid a challenging time for brick-and-mortar stores. Activewear Athleta is closing a major location in Hoboken, New Jersey, and Western boot brand Freebird is in the process of closing multiple stores nationwide while seeking a new owner.
