Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acted with urgency in anticipation of an extreme heat warning, providing shelter for individuals living in a longstanding encampment in East Hollywood. The initiative, dubbed Inside Safe, successfully moved more than 20 Angelenos from the encampment next to the 101 freeway. These individuals now have access to meals, air conditioning, and running water—a stark contrast from the struggles faced while living on the streets. Identifying homelessness as an acute crisis, Mayor Bass has dedicated her term to implementing swift action, which began with declaring a state of emergency on her first day as Mayor. Her administration’s efforts are evident, reducing street homelessness by 17.5% since December 2022, according to the latest Point in Time Count. Despite an increase in homelessness nationwide, Los Angeles has seen a decline for two consecutive years.
