Celebrate Mexican Independence Day: Parades, fiestas, concerts, and film screenings will unfurl, with pride and joy, across Southern California as we begin Hispanic Heritage Month. The multi-week occasion begins Sept. 15, but several big parties, including Fiesta Patrias in Santa Ana (Sept. 13 and 14) and the East Los Angeles Mexican Independence Day Parade and Festival (Sept. 14) will start the revelry in the days before. Both festivities are free to join.

CicLAvia visits Historic South Central and Watts: Spend a gorgeous late-summer Sunday cycling or strolling along car-free streets while getting acquainted with some of the landmarks, artworks, and restaurants of S. Central Avenue. Entry is free at the Sept. 14 event and people-powered movement is the theme. There are a few hubs to rest and hobnob at, including the Jazz Park Hub, and a number of Blue Line Metro stations are just blocks away.

Jaws: The Exhibition: Blockbusters have been blockbustering for five or so decades now, but when “Jaws” broke the surface and dun-dun-dun’d straight into our dreams, or rather nightmares, everything in the movie biz changed. This new Academy Museum exhibition boasts hundreds of artifacts from the fin-tastic film and splashy stories aplenty. It opens Sept. 14; see it before it is dun-dun-done July 26, 2026…
