A Huntington Park jailer is on leave after allegedly handing over a person who was being held in the city’s jail to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, which would violate state law.
The city announced in a Sept. 26 Instagram post that a member of the Huntington Park Police Department had been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into a possible violation of a California law that prohibits “state and local law enforcement agencies … from using money or personnel to investigate, interrogate, detain, detect, or arrest persons for immigration enforcement purposes.” The city manager and elected leaders would not say whether the employee was a sworn officer.
“The City of Huntington Park is aware of an incident involving the release of an individual from the Police Department jail who was later detained by federal agents,” the statement said. “A staff member has been placed on administrative leave, and the matter is under investigation for possible violations of state law and city policy.”…
