Former Student Arrested After Stabbing Three Staff, Planting Pipe Bombs at Torrance Learning Center

Torrance, CA – A former student is in custody after allegedly stabbing three staff members and planting two pipe bombs at the Switzer Learning Center in Torrance on Monday morning, according to the Torrance Police Department.

The incident began around 8:15 a.m. when authorities say the suspect, identified as a former student of the center, allegedly stabbed three staff members and attempted to stab a fourth before fleeing the scene.

Two of the victims were quickly transported to Harbor General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. A third victim was treated at the scene by the Torrance Fire Department.

Following a rapid response, law enforcement officials apprehended the suspect. During the arrest, the individual reportedly informed officers that he had placed two pipe bombs in the vicinity of 208th Street and Amapola Avenue.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad was immediately dispatched to the location. They successfully located two devices, which were determined to be incendiary and were safely rendered harmless.

Later Monday, the Torrance Police Department released a follow-up statement confirming that, “Following a thorough investigation and assessment of the area, we are pleased to report that there is no ongoing threat to the public.” The Bomb Squad concluded its investigation, determining the area to be safe.

Police have not yet revealed the name, age, or potential motive of the suspect, stating that their investigation into the incident is currently open and ongoing.

The Torrance Police Department expressed gratitude to the community and media for their cooperation and understanding throughout the situation. “The safety and security of our community members is our utmost priority,” authorities stated, also acknowledging the “prompt response from all assisting agencies involved.”
