In the early hours of November 2, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Patrol Division were summoned to address a disturbance reported to involve fighting and a female in distress on the 8900 block of Balcom Avenue. At the scene, they encountered Louis Jordan Cortez, now known to have been holding a woman against her will while brandishing a firearm, according to a news release from the LAPD’s Media Relations Division. The confrontation culminated in an officer-involved shooting after Cortez failed to heed police commands to disarm.

As detailed by the LAPD, the escalated situation resulted in Cortez firing a shot at the victim amid the struggle. Although struck by police gunfire, Cortez did not immediately cease his resistance, barricading himself in the residence’s front yard. His eventual surrender came after negotiations with law enforcement, and he was subsequently hospitalized for his injuries.
