Police shoot, arrest suspect stabbing himself with broken glass in Koreatown

A recent investigation update revealed that the man shot by Los Angeles police in Koreatown on Friday was repeatedly stabbing himself with shards of broken glass before running toward officers, officials said.

The LAPD said officers responded around 7:15 a.m. to the 850 block of South Vermont Avenue on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect. Callers reported that the man — now identified as 35-year-old Freisman Sanchez — had shattered the windows of a business and was cutting himself with the broken glass.

When officers arrived, they found Sanchez standing in the middle of the street wearing a shirt “covered in blood” and holding a piece of broken glass in his hand, investigators said. Officers attempted to communicate with him, but he refused to comply and began walking away.

As additional units arrived, police say Sanchez suddenly ran directly toward one of the officers, prompting an officer-involved shooting. Sanchez was struck by gunfire and collapsed on a nearby sidewalk, where he was then taken into custody…
