LOS ANGELES — More than 70,000,000 people are enrolled in a federally funded health care program called Medicaid. New immigration requirements could mean a loss of coverage for people who are in the country illegally.
What You Need To Know
- Undocumented immigrants will not be eligible for Medicaid beginning Jan. 1, 2026
- California will fully cover health plans for undocumented immigrants who financially qualify for Medi-Cal and sign up in time
- Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, California is freezing new enrollments for anybody new who does not have satisfactory immigration status
- An 80-hour work requirement and a premium are also expected to be added in 2027
Medicaid is a government-funded health care insurance program for people with limited income and resources. Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, undocumented immigrants will not be eligible for Medicaid.
