(NewsNation) — Police in Los Angeles are asking the public for help in identifying a toddler who was found during an attempted car theft investigation.
The department responded to a call on Dec. 28 in the Highland Park area of the city. The car’s owner told authorities that a Hispanic man had tried to steal the car before running away, leaving behind a boy and a dog.

According to the department, the boy is believed to be approximately 2 years old and has not been identified. He is described by the department as having “medium complexion and curly brown hair” and wearing a light gray quarter-zip sweater. The department said the boy is unable to communicate his name and that no one has claimed him or the dog.

The boy remains in the custody of the state’s Department of Children and Family Services, and the dog has been placed with the Los Angeles County Animal Services.
