Street Takeover Turns Violent in Long Beach, Raising Questions About Enforcement

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A street takeover in North Long Beach early Sunday morning ended in gunfire, leaving one man wounded and renewing questions about enforcement of street takeover laws in the city.

According to authorities, officers were dispatched at approximately 1:33 a.m. on Jan. 4, 2026, to the 6600 block of Downey Avenue following reports of a street takeover and a shooting. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies, who assisted and were first on scene, located a male adult victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body.

Deputies rendered medical aid until Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
