L.A. County Rejects Expansion of Tenant Eviction Protections

A proposal to extend eviction protections for renters across Los Angeles County failed Tuesday when the Board of Supervisors declined to move it forward, heightening uncertainty for low-income tenants already navigating rising rents and housing insecurity.

The measure, introduced by Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, would have required landlords to wait until a renter was three months behind in fair market rent before initiating eviction proceedings and would have applied countywide. The motion did not receive a second from any other supervisor, a procedural requirement to bring it to a full vote.

Under current county policy, landlords in unincorporated areas such as East Los Angeles and Altadena must wait until a tenant is at least one month behind on rent, based on U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development fair market rent figures, before pursuing eviction.
