How bad will SoCal storms be? Rain to ramp up Monday, but not over yet

A series of storm systems comes just as Valentine’s Day weekend wraps up, ushering in widespread heavy rain in Southern California on Monday, Feb. 16, as wet weather and chillier temperatures could shape much of the coming week.

And if you’re headed up north, there’s no reprieve for you as the Bay Area is also expecting plentiful rain.

The wet weather follows a stretch of elevated temperatures for Southern California — several degrees higher than normally observed this time of year. For most people, the “main threat period” is Feb. 16, said David Houk, AccuWeather, senior meteorologist and western expert. Although it’s a bit farther out, some models suggest another system coming Thursday that could bring rain again, meaning Southern Californians aren’t “out of the woods yet” later next week, according to Houk.

Good news if your Valentine’s Day plans involve the outdoors. It’s supposed to remain dry throughout Southern California on Saturday, Feb. 14, according to National Weather Service offices that serve swaths of the region.

It’s the first storm system that we can expect the most widespread heavy rain, according to Houk. For those Ventura County, that rain is forecasted to begin the night of Sunday Feb. 15.
