Concrete Layer Peels Off In Santa Monica Channel During Storm

LOS ANGELES – A jagged pile of concrete slabs is sitting in the Santa Monica Channel near the point where Rustic Canyon meets the channel – and City Hall is watching it as the current storm system moves through.

Councilwoman Traci Park said LA County Public Works field engineers determined the blocks are not loose rubble hauled in by the storm but a layer of cement installed in the 1970s that has peeled away. Park said engineers estimate the failure has cut capacity near the confluence by about 15 percent, though the channel is still expected to handle projected storm flows…
