California residents shaken by 3.5 magnitude earthquake

Southern California residents felt the ground shake Sunday night when a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, marking the third seismic event to rattle the region in just one week.

The temblor hit at approximately 9:40 p.m. about 14 miles southwest of Rancho Palos Verdes in the Pacific Ocean near Catalina Island, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake occurred at a depth of nearly seven miles beneath the ocean floor and was followed minutes later by a smaller 1.9 magnitude aftershock.

Thousands of residents across Los Angeles and Orange counties reported feeling the shaking, with the USGS receiving reports from communities stretching from the Orange County coast near Huntington Beach northward through Long Beach, Inglewood and into Los Angeles proper. Some residents as far east as Fullerton also felt the tremor.

No damage or injuries reported despite wide impact

Despite being felt across such a broad area, authorities reported no injuries or structural damage from the earthquake.
