A 15-year-old boy was shot Saturday evening at Dockweiler State Beach after a fight broke out near Lifeguard Tower 55, turning a crowded stretch of shoreline into a crime scene. The teen was hit after hearing a single gunshot, then rushed to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Witnesses scattered as the suspect took off, and officers moved in to cordon off part of the sand while they tried to piece together what happened.
Los Angeles police officers told CBS Los Angeles the shooting was reported around 7:20 p.m. in the 11400 block of Vista Del Mar, near Tower 55. By the time officers arrived, the suspect was already gone, and investigators said they did not yet know what kind of vehicle the person was driving. Detectives told the station they believe the shooting may have been gang-related. No arrests had been made as of the initial alert.
Dockweiler’s recent safety concerns
This is not the first time Dockweiler has found itself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. In April 2023, a spring-break party that went viral on social media ended with three teenagers wounded after gunfire broke out, according to the Los Angeles Times. That chaotic night, and similar episodes, highlighted how big crowds on the beach can overwhelm lifeguards and local police, sometimes forcing neighboring agencies to step in with mutual-aid support.
